What is hot melt adhesive?

Hot melt adhesive (also known as hot melt glue) is usually a 100% solid formulation (no water or solvents involved) based on a thermoplastic polymer. Hot melt adhesives are sold as a solid at room temperature and are "activated" when heated above their softening point (usually between 50 and 160 degrees). Once melted (in a hot melt can), the adhesive can be applied to the substrate in its liquefied or molten state. The hot melt wets the substrate, penetrates the surface (and any cavities), and then cures, ensuring the bond. This setup/cooling process takes very little time. The glue that cools and remains tacky is called a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA).

When a hot melt adhesive cools back to room temperature, it rapidly builds up its internal strength. The solidified state of a hot melt adhesive is where it has structural integrity and can be used as an adhesive. Hot melt adhesives can be applied to the substrate in various ways (when they are in liquid form), such as by roll or, more commonly, by spraying or jetting from a nozzle or gun. There are also many application patterns, such as spiral sprays, dots, and continuous lines.

Hot melt adhesives are used in a myriad of applications in many different industries in both the commercial and residential sectors. You can find hot melt adhesives in food packaging, woodworking, product assembly, labeling, children's toys, and crafts.

Hot melt adhesives require a delicate balance of formulation ingredients. Still, the main components of a typical packaging hot melt adhesive are polymers (to provide strength and flexibility), resins (to provide wetting and bonding properties), and waxes (to control viscosity and open time/setting speed). For hot melt pressure-sensitive adhesives (HMPSA), plasticizers are typically included to aid flexibility and control viscosity.

There are various types of hot melt adhesives, such as EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) for general purpose bonding, polyolefins for difficult-to-bond plastics, and more modern packaging hot melt adhesives - metallocene (MPO) for small amounts of strength, and today's very popular ECO friendly PUR hot melt adhesives.
