What is sheet metal forming?

Sheet metal is sourced in a flat state and then cut through a series of progressive steps to form the final state. For a typical sheet metal project, the first step is equivalent to sheet metal cutting, where shear, laser, waterjet, plasma or punch is used to create the internal holes and edge features of the part. This process is also known as deflashing.

Once the blank is produced, the next step is to form the sheet metal using a variety of tools, but most commonly a brake of some sort. Brake presses can be manual or automatic and use die inserts to create the desired angular bends to form the two-dimensional sheet into a three-dimensional object. Sheet metal forming can bend parts in multiple directions, creating simple parts such as brackets to highly complex geometries that may require custom tooling. Once the tooling is in place, it is very cost effective to manufacture subsequent sheet metal parts in production. This makes sheet metal fabrication and forming ideal for small to high volume production.
